If you've taken a casting lesson and been taught with a short floating shooting head with no sink tip attached best ask for your money back! Seek out a ghillie who'll teach you exactly how to 'time' the release of your Spey cast anchor point correctly to force you to bring your peripheral vision into play.

This perfect salmon fly was designed by myself on the River Tay 20 years ago and is an absolute salmon magnet when fished properly. Many experienced salmon anglers swear by the effectiveness of this pattern and it's sometimes wrongly referred to as the Newtyle Shrimp however it's proper registered name is the Jock's Shrimp as a credit to its creator. Here are the exact dressings for this deadly Scottish salmon fly pattern;
Hook / Tube: as required
Thread / Silk: Uni Thread 6/0 or 8/0, Red
Tag / Butt: Oval silver as for Rib
Tail: Orange Arctic Fox or equivalent with pearl flashabou accent or mirage over, just 2 or perhaps 3 strands max.
Tying note: it's important to set the Tag / Butt in place first, this helps lift the Fox tail slightly, increases movement and helps avoid

Lifelike Salmon Fly Movement

When you're fishing your salmon fly in most fast moving streams there will be a certain amount of natural movement as the fly arcs around from it's initial casting angle starting point to the riverside edge downstream of you.

This perfect salmon was landed during rough weather conditions on the beautiful & productive Guay Pool of the River Tay near Dunkeld. This fine fish weighed 12lbs and was soon released to the river to continue its upstream journey. This was this Irish fisher's first Scottish salmon hence the big smile. I took this salmon capture shot while working as this salmon fishing guest's personal salmon guide that day.

Grinding Out Salmon Catches

Salmon fishing in Scotland has always been the ultimate fishing challenge and much of the moaning & groaning I hear today about diminished catches in my opinion has often as much to do with a lack of angling ability & rod pressure than in many cases a lack of fish.

This salmon fishing holiday angler is fly fishing through the Mike's Run Pool of the River Tummel during a cold & wet early Spring day. I just had to grab this shot as his salmon guide when the sun appeared through the clouds as it was far too spectacular a light show moment to ignore.

The early Spring weeks of the Scottish salmon fishing season have always been fascinating to me and salmon movement observations over the years have made me realise the value of these traditionally quieter early Spring fishing months.

Here's a truly amazing piece of salmon water on the Kinnaird Estate near Pitlochry which is a firm favourite for visiting salmon anglers. Salmon love to sit close in to this riverbank beside the broken water riffles you can see in this photograph. Personally I seldom fail to hook a salmon while fishing through this perfect River Tay salmon pool.

Identifying The Salmon Lie

In periods of low water it's much easier to identify the exact areas of a salmon pool where fish are likely to be found. If you focus your efforts on these likely areas you'll fish far more effectively and your batting average is likely to soar!

Here's a lovely sunset at Dunkeld on the River Tay. It's always nice to fish the Tay for salmon right up to this special time of the fishing day and often salmon will move as the light starts to fade so there's always a fair chance of a fish in addition to this beautiful natural light show. You can see this shot was taken during early Spring before the leaves appear on the riverbank trees.

Salmon River Light Changes

For those of you who are new to this game pay particular attention to light & weather changes throughout the course of the fishing day as they are definite 'triggers' for salmon movement & taking behaviour especially when they've not been cooperating as much!

A heart racing close up inspection with one of these fine Atlantic salmon and will remain in your memory banks for an entire lifetime. This perfect Summer salmon came to a deadly Jock's Shrimp salmon fly and was caught near to the River Tummel/Tay confluence which is located not too far away from Pitlochry in Perthshire. Note the fish friendly fine mesh of the landing net behind the salmon.

For those of you who are relatively new to Scottish salmon fishing here's a few pointers to assist you with what you should be focussed on after you've hooked a salmon. A salmon landing opportunity is best achieved if you follow this basic advice.

Here's Micheal Keaton and myself as his salmon fishing guide up in Glen Tilt near Blair Atholl. Michael was the original Batman actor and is a very keen and skilled fly fisher. I took him up to the Atholl Estates who own the River Tilt and showed him many heavyweight Tay salmon that were holding up in the pools of this magic little River Tay tributary.
